Why startups are assessed differently
Conventional business funding leans on trading history — revenue, deposits, time in business. A new business has none of that yet, so the assessment shifts to the founder's personal credit profile and the structure of the business itself.
The routes that are usually available first
Business credit cards and credit-based funding programs are typically the practical starting point, because they are underwritten on personal credit rather than business revenue. Introductory 0% programs can make this capital notably cheaper when the balance is managed inside the promotional window.
Equipment financing can also be viable early, because the asset itself provides security.
Prepare the foundation
Form the entity properly, obtain an EIN, and open a dedicated business bank account before you seek funding. Keep personal and business spending strictly separate from the first transaction — mixed accounts complicate every future application.
Then work on the personal credit profile: lower utilization, no recent derogatory activity, and a clean inquiry record all materially expand what is available.
Plan the next stage now
Treat the first funding round as a bridge. Once the business is depositing consistently, revenue-weighted routes such as a line of credit or revenue based funding open up, usually at better terms. Building deposit history deliberately from day one shortens that timeline.
